A word from the CEO

clip_image002There’s so much that has been going on recently, it feels as though 2010 was in full swing before the year even started! But it’s been a
fantastic, fast-paced start to the year with many unit tours, photo shoots, events and other activities—all aimed at increasing awareness of the WSPCCA, congenital heart disorders, and the effectiveness of corrective surgery and intervention. As a result, we’ve seen a marked increase in interest from private international mother companies (like Bayer and
Siemens) and individuals, all of whom are eager to become involved in our cause.

This month we hosted our third annual Cardiac Congress, which was packed to capacity. Not only did we manage to increase the duration of the Congress to two days, but we also managed to register the event for continuing professional development (CPD) points. We thank
everyone involved, especially Dr. Kinsely and Dr. Colsen, our valued speakers and our sponsors (Viking Medical, Netcare Sunninghill Hospital, Netcare Group, Edwards Life Sciences, the Medtronic Foundation, Teleflex Medical, SA Biomedical, Surgical Innovations, Ampath and Mr. Temperley) for making this an
unbelievably successful event.

We were also able to share some very exciting news for the WSPCCA this quarter, with the expansion of our
service capability to the Cape, in partnership with Dr. Susan Vosloo, Chris Tilney and their respective teams from the Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital. We’ve already operated on three children from the Eastern Cape and we’re excited to see the progress of the project with such a dedicated and passionate team in the Cape.

As we get the new year into high gear, I’d like to send a special thanks to our two wonderful advertising and publicity teams—Leo Burnett and Tribeca Public Relations. We would never have been able to attain what we did last year if it wasn’t for their positive contributions to the WSPCCA’s activities and the high level of strategic thinking that has really taken the unit to the next level in terms of the way we operate and market the project.

On a final note, our SMS campaign is still running as well, so don’t forget to tell your friends and family that they can make a R10 donation by texting through the word “heart” to 38208. Every little bit helps.

Until next time, God bless, and may you have a wonderfully peaceful Easter.

About The WSPCF

The Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Foundation (WSPCF) is a philanthropic paediatric cardiac foundation for Africa, focussing on delivering life-saving surgery for underprivileged children with congenital heart disorders from across Africa. It also aims to develop diagnostic and treatment skills amongst Africa’s medical fraternity and conducts critical research into paediatric cardiac healthcare. The cardiac surgery or intervention is undertaken at the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa situated in Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, , as well as at Cape Town’s Netcare Christian Barnard Memorial and Red Cross Children’s Hospitals. The WSPCF was founded by Dr. Robin Kinsley in 2003, and was established as a living legacy to the late Walter Sisulu and his widow, Albertina, both of whom dedicated their lives to helping children in need.
