A word from Tariro Gandiya, our elective student from Scotland

clip_image001A place where hope is restored, prayers are answered and lives are saved. My medical elective at the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa exceeded all expectation and was more than I could have hoped for. I was privileged to spend two months at the unit, which did not seem enough. Not only did I witness the work in the operating theatre but also behind the scenes, walking side by side with mothers and children through the
journey of hope and restoration.

The centre brought a whole new outlook on a patient-centred
approach, and holistic care, catering for the child’s needs and also to the families by providing shelter and also emotional support. Each individual who came through the doors became an integral part of the WSPCCA family. Each child that had ever walked through the doors was known by name, this took me by surprise given that the centre opened in 2004. I was integrated into the family as if I was a prodigal daughter. Never have I seen such dedicated individuals who believe so much in what they do, a place where the boundaries of dreams are re-defined – limitless! With each day, I was
challenged to work harder and inspired to DREAM BIG! The commitment of the surgical team of the WSPPCA was phenomenal and has affirmed my aspiration to become a paediatric cardiothoracic surgeon. Words are not enough to explain my experience nor can I express my gratitude adequately. My only dream now is to one day return. Thank you very much for the experience.

About The WSPCF

The Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Foundation (WSPCF) is a philanthropic paediatric cardiac foundation for Africa, focussing on delivering life-saving surgery for underprivileged children with congenital heart disorders from across Africa. It also aims to develop diagnostic and treatment skills amongst Africa’s medical fraternity and conducts critical research into paediatric cardiac healthcare. The cardiac surgery or intervention is undertaken at the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa situated in Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, , as well as at Cape Town’s Netcare Christian Barnard Memorial and Red Cross Children’s Hospitals. The WSPCF was founded by Dr. Robin Kinsley in 2003, and was established as a living legacy to the late Walter Sisulu and his widow, Albertina, both of whom dedicated their lives to helping children in need.
