Third Annual Cardiac Congress at the WSPCCA

clip_image002The WSPCCA hosted its third and, to date,
largest annual Cardiac Congress, attracting over 100 of the world’s leading minds in paediatric cardiothoracic medicine.

The WSPCCA Cardiac Congress has set the stage as one of South Africa’s only medical
congresses dedicated to paediatric cardiac
surgery.

This year, the WSPCCA played host to Drs.
clip_image002[4]Richard Jonas from Washington, Christian
Brizard from Melbourne, Chris Knott-Craig from the USA, and Christian Schreiber from
Munich, four highly-respected paediatric
cardiothoracic surgeons.

“We want to help African healthcare
professionals understand the importance of
paediatric cardiothoracic surgery and the
unbelievably positive impact it can have on the lives of children who for all intents and purposes are living at risk on a daily basis if not treated,” says Dr. Robin Kinsley.

clip_image002[6]It is his hope, he says, that the doctors who
attended the Congress – especially those from
African countries – will embrace the values of the WSPCCA to deliver world-class surgical
services and to continue skills transfer in their own countries with mini-units of their own.

Dr Kinsley would like to pay special tribute to Martin Lampacher of the Viking Group of
Companies for their sponsorship towards the 2010 WSPCCA congress.

The Viking Group is celebrating 20 years in business this year, provides exceptional
service and is committed to continued
professional development. Amongst other things, Viking Medical continues to support
further CPD initiatives as well as providing
in-service training on site for their products and equipment installed at the Sunninghill Hospital.

Together with Netcare the Viking Group of
Companies initiated the Blood Conservation
Programme in South Africa in the late 90’s and continues to work closely with the South
African Blood Transfusion Services in this
critical field. We wish them and the Sorin Group every future success and thank them for their ongoing support.

Thanks also to Nicky, Anton, Maddie and Jacqui for all their help in organising the event.

About The WSPCF

The Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Foundation (WSPCF) is a philanthropic paediatric cardiac foundation for Africa, focussing on delivering life-saving surgery for underprivileged children with congenital heart disorders from across Africa. It also aims to develop diagnostic and treatment skills amongst Africa’s medical fraternity and conducts critical research into paediatric cardiac healthcare. The cardiac surgery or intervention is undertaken at the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa situated in Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, , as well as at Cape Town’s Netcare Christian Barnard Memorial and Red Cross Children’s Hospitals. The WSPCF was founded by Dr. Robin Kinsley in 2003, and was established as a living legacy to the late Walter Sisulu and his widow, Albertina, both of whom dedicated their lives to helping children in need.
