A word from the CEO

clip_image002clip_image004We have come to the end of another WSPCCA year and what a year it has been!

Despite the financial crisis, we still managed to sustain and meet our primary goal of service delivery and patient care. Our second goal of training and development is well under with the Pilot Skills Exchange Project with the Deutsche Hart Centrum being successfully concluded and Dr’s Johann Brink and Frank Edwin 5 months into their Paediatric Cardiac Surgical Fellowship.

It’s definitely been an exciting year, with the launch of the Sheika Al Jalila house, celebrating Mama Albertina’s birthday at the launch and the gala dinner that raised both raised us some additional money for the year and opened international doors for the foundation. Don’t forget we’ll have an open house for our partners to come and take a look at what we’ve achieved with the house on the 20th of January 2010. We also need to give a big thank you to First for Women Insurance, which has sponsored the first year’s worth of comprehensive insurance, free of charge for us!

2010 will see collaboration with the management and cardiac teams of Netcare’s Christian Barnard Hospital and Red Cross Children’s Hospital as well as a primary rheumatic heart project undertaken by Heart for Heart Foundation and Steve Bike Hospital. We’re also putting plans in place for our 2010 WSPCCA Cardiac Congress, which will take place 24-25th March 2010..

This year would not have been possible if it weren’t for my great team in the WSPCCA office, our wise council for the board of trustees, including the Sisulu family, our clinical expertise from Dr Kinsley and the team – thank you for your generous discounts. To the Sunninghill Radiology and Ampath Laboratory as well as our many other platinum and other sponsors – heartfelt thanks for your continued support.

We remember those little ones on waiting lists who have lost their struggle for life; they were so brave and so tenacious. Our prayers are with those who also came to us – just too late. God Bless them and their families at Christmas.

God Bless and may you have a joyful festive season! – “Christmas is the time for kindling the fire of hospitality in our homes and the genial fire of charity in our hearts”

About The WSPCF

The Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Foundation (WSPCF) is a philanthropic paediatric cardiac foundation for Africa, focussing on delivering life-saving surgery for underprivileged children with congenital heart disorders from across Africa. It also aims to develop diagnostic and treatment skills amongst Africa’s medical fraternity and conducts critical research into paediatric cardiac healthcare. The cardiac surgery or intervention is undertaken at the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa situated in Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, , as well as at Cape Town’s Netcare Christian Barnard Memorial and Red Cross Children’s Hospitals. The WSPCF was founded by Dr. Robin Kinsley in 2003, and was established as a living legacy to the late Walter Sisulu and his widow, Albertina, both of whom dedicated their lives to helping children in need.
