WSPCCA goes to Canada

picture8The World Summit on “Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery Services, Education and Cardiac Care in Children and Adults with Congenital Heart Disease” was recently hosted by Christo Tchervenkov, Director of  cardiovascular  surgery  at Montreal  Children’s
Hospital in Montreal 19 — 21 June 2008.

The objectives of the World Summit are to build a global coalition to improve cardiac care for children and adults with paediatric and congenital heart disease across the world and to establish a multi-societal World Federation for paediatric and congenital heart disease.

This year the Summit was dedicated to Walter and
Albertina Sisulu and all the cardiac children of the world.

The first day of the summit highlighted all that is new and innovative in the field of paediatric and congenital heart disease. The second day was depressing as every continent presented the reality of its deficits  and overwhelming  need of cardiac  children. Dr John  Hewittson  from Red  Cross
Children’s Hospital presented the African scenario while Dr Hendrik Mamorare from WSPCCA presented the South Africa scenario.  The third day of the summit, Lynda Bleazard presented the WSPCCA – “a  ray  of  hope  for a continent  in  need” along  with  other presentations  of hope  and
inspiration from other continents.

Elinor Sisulu was the keynote speaker and received a standing ovation after discussing Walter and Albertina’s Legacy for the care of children as well as her courageous involvement and heroic
attempts at democracy for Zimbabwe.

This world summit was a fantastic networking opportunity and has created a springboard to “partner” with other first-world centres and become involved in staff exchange, skills updates and further training and development.

Dr Tchervenkov together with Dr Stellin from Padova, Italy, recently visited the WSPCCA in March 2008  and participated in the WSPCCA’s first Day Symposium. It was after this symposium that they invited the WSPCCA to participate in the World Summit.  Dr. Robin Kingsley is on the inaugural board of the World Society for Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and plans to make the WSPCCA Day Symposium an annual event .

We have to take this opportunity to thank Netcare Sunninghill Hospital, Netcare Chairman’s Fund and Southern Sun who sponsored our inaugural 2008 Day Symposium.

About The WSPCF

The Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Foundation (WSPCF) is a philanthropic paediatric cardiac foundation for Africa, focussing on delivering life-saving surgery for underprivileged children with congenital heart disorders from across Africa. It also aims to develop diagnostic and treatment skills amongst Africa’s medical fraternity and conducts critical research into paediatric cardiac healthcare. The cardiac surgery or intervention is undertaken at the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa situated in Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, , as well as at Cape Town’s Netcare Christian Barnard Memorial and Red Cross Children’s Hospitals. The WSPCF was founded by Dr. Robin Kinsley in 2003, and was established as a living legacy to the late Walter Sisulu and his widow, Albertina, both of whom dedicated their lives to helping children in need.
